Christmas came early to the Friendship Senior Home in Antioch. Last week, a horde of Santas decked out in bright red Santa hats brought gift bags filled with toiletries, teddy bears, Queen B lap quilts and Rizzo fleece shawls to the home’s delighted seniors.

For several mornings before and after the winter solstice (tonight at 10:08 p.m.), our Sun rises over the same point of reference on the eastern horizon.

Day by day, as imperceptibly as a loose lug nut unraveling on a wheel bolt, sunlight has become increasingly scarce. The wheel came off on November’s exit ramp to Standard Time, when our road trip suddenly required headlights.
